Bush Refused Guard Physical*

Bush was accepted into the Guard, he failed to live up to the requirements of his service, including following an order. And we also reported that the documents were written by Lt. Bush's National Guard squad commander, Col. Jerry Killian, who passed away in 1984. . .Col. Killian's secretary, Marion Carr Knox, describes herself as Col. Killian's "right hand" during much of the 1970s. . .“I did not type those memos. . . says Knox. “I know that I didn’t type them. However, the information in those is correct.” . . Knox says the information in the four memos that CBS obtained is very familiar, but she doesn't believe the memos are authentic. She does, however, remember her boss, Col. Jerry Killian, being upset over Mr. Bush's failure to take a physical . . . She told 60 Minutes again and again that she believed President Bush refused a direct order to take a physical.CBS, 9/15/04  MORE

Bush: Not Your Average Poor Boy*

[D]uring the final two years of his obligation, Bush did not comply with Air Force regulations that impose a time limit on making up missed drills. What's more, he apparently never made up five months of drills he missed in 1972, contrary to assertions by the administration. . .  Some experts say they remain mystified as to how Bush obtained an honorable discharge. Lawrence Korb, . . says. . . that Bush . . . "should have been called to active duty." . .He also missed his flight physical. By May 2, 1973, his superiors said they could not evaluate his performance because he "has not been observed." . . .adds James Currie, . .  "Clearly, if you were the average poor boy who got drafted and sent into the active force," he says, "they weren't going to let you out before you had completed your obligation."  Kit R. Roane, U.S. News & WR, 9/20/04 Issue  MORE

Bush Shirked Military Duties*

The controversy continues over the authenticity of memos obtained by CBS News that show President Bush's National Guard commander believed Mr. Bush at times shirked his duties and used his political influence. . . The network is adamantly defending the authenticity of the memos, . . .saying experts who examined the memos concluded they were authentic documents produced by Mr. Bush's former commander, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian. . .What the Killian memos purport to show is that Mr. Bush defied a direct order to appear for a physical exam, that his performance as an officer was lacking in other ways and that Mr. Bush used family connections to try to quash any inquiry into his lapses.. . In a separate development, . . .Bush promised to sign up with a Boston-area unit when he left his Texas unit . . .. Mr. Bush never signed up with a Boston unit.(CBS/AP), 9/10/04 MORE

Bush Guard Service Incomplete*

President Bush's Vietnam-era service in the National Guard came under renewed scrutiny on Wednesday as newfound documents emerged from his squadron commander's file that suggested favorable treatment.  At the same time, a once powerful Texas Democrat came forward to say that he had "abused my position of power" by helping Mr. Bush and others join the Guard.  Democrats also worked to stoke the issue with a new advertisement by a Texas group that featured a former lieutenant colonel, Bob Mintz, who said he never saw Mr. Bush in the period he transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama Air National Guard. . . Colonel Killian [Bush's commander] also wrote in a memo that his superiors were forcing him to give Lieutenant Bush a favorable review, but that he refused.

Bush Daddy Helps W. Become Sky Pilot *

In 1968, former Congressman George Herbert Walker Bush of Texas, fresh from voting to send other men’s sons to Vietnam, enlisted his own son in a very special affirmative action program, the ‘champagne’ unit of the Texas Air National Guard. . . This week, former Lt. Governor Ben Barnes of Texas 'fessed up to pulling the strings to keep Little George out of the jungle. . .Barnes appears to have made lucrative use of his knowledge of our President’s slithering out of the draft as a lever to protect a multi-billion dollar contract for a client.  That's the information in a confidential letter buried deep in the files of the US Justice Department that fell into my hands at BBC television. . . And so it came to pass that the governor's commission reversed itself and gave GTech the billion dollar deal without a bid.  Greg Palast, 8/28/04. MORE

The Media Blinks*

[T]he media blinked this weekend, doing its collective best to ignore an embarrassing new revelation by the prominent Texas politician who says he landed President Bush a coveted pilot spot in the Texas Air National Guard during the height of the Vietnam War, and is now "ashamed" of his actions. The explosive comments from a central player in the National Guard drama -- captured on video and available online -- have received just cursory coverage in the mainstream media . . .The [NY] Times' story was buried deep inside, next to a big takeout on GOP-connected Swift Boat Vets leader John O'Neill. . . It's also worth noting that the Democrats haven't been aggressive in pushing the Barnes story to the media, either. (Imagine how GOP attack dogs would hype a revelation from a politician who pulled strings to get Kerry his medals.)   Eric Boehlert, Salon, 8/30/04  MORE

On Friday, February 13, 2004, the White House released what it described as all the documents in Bush’s personnel filesThese documents prove the following:

1) “Points” records showing that for two straight years, Bush did not perform the training that was mandated by law, and which could not be excused by his superior officers. (See The Points Scam)

2) Payroll records showing that Bush requested and received pay and point credit for which he was ineligible under Air Force policy (See Fraud—The Secrets of Bush’s Payroll Records Revealed)

3) Documents related to Bush’s attempted transfer to the “9921st Air Reserve Squadron” showing that the request was an attempt by Bush to fraudulently escape his obligations as a member of the United States Armed Forces (See The Transfer Scam)

4) Documents showing that Bush’s superior officers attempted to cover up for Bush being “AWOL”, but eventually had to admit that they had lost track of Bush for an entire year. (See The Cover-up in Texas).

5) Documents showing that Bush intended to desert the Armed Forces with almost a year of his statutory six year participation requirement unfulfilled (See Discharge, or Desertion?)

6) Documents showing that the Air Force understood that Bush was a “deserter”, and had taken the steps necessary to deal with someone in Bush’s position who had abandoned their commitment to the US Government. See (Deserter: Bush After TXANG)

The Bush documents also reveal that

1) Bush’s personnel files were tampered with to disguise what had occurred.

2) The person upon whom the media has relied upon for its interpretation of Bush’s military records (an individual who was specifically engaged by the 2000 Bush campaign to “clear” Bush) was directly involved in providing Bush with favorable treatment as a member of the Texas Air National Guard, and

3) This person has lied about the nature of Bush’s records, and made claims regarding Bush’s obligations as a member of the United States Armed Forces that have absolutely no basis in fact

Lt. Governor Apologizes for Getting W. into the Guard*

. In a video originally posted on the Web by a pro-Kerry organization in Austin, Texas, Ben Barnes, a former lieutenant governor of Texas, apologized for his role in getting a young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard while young men who were not from prominent or wealthy families "died in Vietnam." . . .. "I got a young man named George W. Bush into the Texas National Guard when I was lieutenant governor, and I'm not necessarily proud of that. But I did it. I got a lot of other people in the National Guard because I thought that was what people should do when you're in office, and you help a lot of rich people." . . said Bush. "Nothing happened. My Guard unit was looking for pilots and I flew for the Guard. I'm proud of my service and any allegation that my dad asked for special favors is simply not true ... I didn't ask anybody to help get me to the Guard either." Jeff Horwitz, Salon Premium, 8/27/04

Guard Records Cover-up *

The microfilm containing the [Bush Alabama Guard Service] records apparently disintegrated as staff were trying to preserve it from decay. BBC, 7/10/04

microfilm when processed and stored properly, has a life expectancy up to 500 years!  Kodak

Some microfilm in an Austin archive is at the center of a lawsuit involving President Bush's military service. The Associated Press sued the Pentagon and the Air Force on Tuesday to get access to all records of the president's military service during the Vietnam War to answer if he fulfilled his duty with the Texas Air National Guard.  The records requested include a copy of Bush's microfilmed personnel file from the Texas State Library in Austin. It has never been made public. KVUE News, 6/22/04

Bush Service Records Destroyed*

Military records that could help establish President Bush's whereabouts during his disputed service in the Texas Air National Guard more than 30 years ago have been inadvertently destroyed, according to the Pentagon. . . .The destroyed records cover three months of a period in 1972 and 1973 when Mr. Bush's claims of service in Alabama are in question.  The disclosure appeared to catch some experts, both pro-Bush and con, by surprise. . .There was no mention of the loss, for example, when White House officials released hundreds of pages of the President's military records last February in an effort to stem Democratic accusations that he was "AWOL" for a time during his commitment to fly at home in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War.  RALPH BLUMENTHAL, NY Times, 7/9/04

ON GUARD -- OR AWOL?

Two members of the Air National Guard unit that President George W. Bush allegedly served with as a young Guard flyer in 1972 had been told to expect him late in that year and were on the lookout for him. He never showed, however; of that both Bob Mintz and Paul Bishop are certain. . . .Recalls Memphian Mintz, now 62: “I remember that I heard someone was coming to drill with us from Texas. And it was implied that it was somebody with political influence. I was a young bachelor then. I was looking for somebody to prowl around with.” But, says Mintz, that “somebody” -- better known to the world now as the president of the United States -- never showed up . . .it is the 187th that the White House continues to contend that Bush belonged to – as recently as last week, JACKSON BAKER, The Memphis Flyer, 2/16/2004

Bush Treated Differently*

An examination by USA TODAY of all the Bush records released to the public and interviews with pilots, Bush's Guard comrades and military personnel experts suggests Bush was treated differently from most pilots:

• Bush was accepted into pilot school even though he scored in the 25th percentile on a standardized test.

• There is no record of a formal procedure called a "flying evaluation board," which normally would have been convened once Bush stopped flying in April 1972. . .

• Bush's records do not show he was given another job in the Air Guard once he quit flying. . .

Bush, whose father was in Congress at the time, was selected for Air Force pilot training, a highly competitive process, despite the speeding tickets and automobile accidents. He had also been arrested for two incidents considered college pranks  Dave Moniz and Jim Drinkard, USA Today, 2/16/04

Bush Service-Record Whitewash

A retired lieutenant colonel in the Texas National Guard complained. . .in 1998 that aides to Gov. George W. Bush improperly screened Mr. Bush's National Guard files. . . Bill Burkett, said . . . that Dan Bartlett, then a senior aide to Governor Bush and now White House communications director,. . .reviewed the file to "make sure nothing will embarrass the governor during his re-election campaign."

Mr. Burkett repeated . . . that Mr. Bush's aides ordered Guard officials to remove damaging information from Mr. Bush's military personnel files. . . Mr. Burkett said he saw a trash basket with discarded papers bearing Mr. Bush's name. . . .A retired officer, Lt. Col. Dennis Adams, said Mr. Burkett told him of the incidents shortly after they happened. RALPH BLUMENTHAL, NY Times 2/12/04

For Shame: A leaked video reveals what Bob Dole really thinks about Bush's tactics.

Of McCain's charge to President Bush during a 2000 debate—"You should be ashamed"—Dole told Wolf Blitzer, "He was right." Dole made the remark off-air, while CNN broadcast the Kerry ad called "Old Tricks," the one featuring McCain's 2000 debate remarks. The campaign stopped airing it recently at McCain's request. . .Although the remark was made off-air, it wasn't made off-camera. A CNN employee who asked not to be named made a digital file of the raw camera feed from the Late Edition studio. . .Question for Bob Dole: If President Bush should be ashamed of his behavior four years ago, why aren't you ashamed now?  Chris Suellentrop, Slate, 8/27/04

Bush Team Deferred *

What is incredible is that these attacks on men who served not just honorably, but heroically, are coming from a hawkish party that is controlled by an astonishing number of men who sprinted as far from the front lines as they could . . . Mr. Bush himself, the nation's commander in chief and the biggest hawk of all. He revels in the accouterments of combat. The story was somewhat different when he was 22 years old and eligible for combat himself. . .Vice President Dick Cheney, another fierce administration hawk. Mr. Cheney asked for and received five deferments. . .Attorney General John Ashcroft. He is reported to have said, "I would have served, if asked." But with the war raging in Vietnam, he received six student deferments and an "occupational deferment" based on the essential nature of a civilian job at Southwest Missouri State University - teaching business law to undergraduates.  Herbert, NY Times, 8/27/04

Swift Boat Veterans Connections*

Houston home builder Bob Perry, a key bankroller for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, is listed as the co-host of a New York City fund-raiser next week for the Harris County GOP, whose guest list includes President Bush's top political adviser.   Mr. Perry, who has given $200,000 to the veterans' group to help launch the anti-John Kerry ads that question the Democrat's Vietnam War record, has denied any links to Mr. Bush or the national Republican Party regarding the Swift Boat Veterans' campaign CHRISTY HOPPE / The Dallas Morning News, 8/23/04

Cordier, who appears in one of SBVT's advertisements was on the Bush campaign's veterans steering committee at the time he made the ad, . .upon being asked whether she had worked with White House officials, SBVT public relations coordinator Merrie Spaeth said "The answer is 'no' unless you refresh my memory." U.S. Newswire, 8/24/04

McCain, Cleland & Kerry*

Kerry did serve with distinction in Vietnam when he easily could have avoided that killing field. His service to his country shouldn't be diminished by the same despicable, politically motivated tactics visited upon Sens. John McCain in South Carolina and Max Cleland in Georgia, also Viet vets. . . .Joe Klein wrote in the New Yorker that Nixon aide Charles Colson formed the Vietnam Veterans for a Just Peace in 1971 solely to attack John Kerry.  Colson told Klein that Kerry "was a thorn in our flesh. He was very articulate, a credible leader of the opposition. He forced us to create a counterfoil. We found a vet named John O'Neill and formed a group called Vietnam Veterans for a Just Peace. We had O'Neill meet the president, and we did everything we could do to boost his group." . . . Bush should [order] Vietnam draft-dodger Karl Rove and the rest of the character-assassination squad who zapped McCain and Cleland to back off.  Col. David H. Hackworth , Worldnet Daily, 8/17/04

W. Bush, the Slanderer*

Records show that the group [Swift Boat Veterans for Truth] received the bulk of its initial financing from two men with ties to the president and his family - one a longtime political associate of Mr. Rove's, the other a treasurer of the George H. W. Bush Library Foundation. A Texas publicist who once helped prepare Mr. Bush's father for his debate when he was running for vice president provided them with strategic advice. And the group's television commercial was produced by the same team that made the devastating ad mocking Michael S. Dukakis in an oversized tank helmet when he and Mr. Bush's father faced off in the 1988 presidential election. . . Several of those now declaring Mr. Kerry "unfit" had lavished praise on him, some as recently as last year. . .Mr. Hoffmann [a retired rear admiral and a leader of the group] approvingly recalled the actions that led to Mr. Kerry's Silver Star: "It took guts, and I admire that."  KATE ZERNIKE and JIM RUTENBERG, NY Times, 8/20/04

Bush Backs Slander *

A leader of the anti-Kerry group, longtime Kerry antagonist John O'Neill, is co-author of a new book accusing Kerry of winning the Silver Star after shooting a fleeing Viet Cong soldier in the back. Medeiros, who was with Kerry during the shooting, says that's not how it happened. On the day of the now-famous incident, Medeiros said the swiftboat, PCF-94, was heading upriver when it ran into an ambush. . . Kerry's boat happened to hit the shore right in front of an enemy soldier holding a grenade launcher. . . .Medeiros remembers Kerry jumping off the boat to give chase. . . Medeiros said. "Just as I rounded a corner behind him, (Kerry) shot the guy."
Kerry won the Silver Star, even though beaching boats to engage the enemy was a highly unorthodox tactic in the Navy
.
Alex Katz, Oakland Tribune, 8/12/04

Comparing 'War Records*

[John McCain] called on the George W Bush campaign to condemn the recent anti-Kerry TV ads questioning the Democratic contender's Vietnam War record, saying, "I think John Kerry served honorably in Vietnam. I think George Bush served honorably in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War."   The contrast is killing. The advertisement, paid for by "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth", alleges to be from a group of veterans . . .But as McCain so subtly implies, they all inadvertently confirm one thing. Kerry was in Vietnam, in combat.  In contrast, not even the best investigator's dirty-tricks department can find a single veteran who saw Bush in any military capacity whatsoever in Vietnam. Nor during his National Guard service in Alabama for 12 months from May 1972.  Ian Williams, Asia Times, 8/7/04
